Susan L Strickland work from Daltons School VA 1875
Written by S. L. Strickland
When a girl at Dalton’s School
Oh, don’t you hear the angels coming,Holy angels in their flight?
Traverse o’er earth and sky,
Notes of loveliness their delight,
Charged with mercy as they fly.
Chorus:
Oh, don’t you hear them? Don’t you hear them?
Coming, coming o’er hill and plain,
I call my name in their heavenly strain.
Oh, don’t you hear the angels coming,Singing as they come?
Oh, bear me angels, angels bear me home.
It is their forms we cannot see,
They attend and guard our way,
With me join their company
For the realms of endless day.
Chorus:
Had we but an angel’s wing,
And an angel’s heart of flame,
Oh, how sweetly would we sing
This anthem of the Saviour’s name.
Chorus:
Yet give thanks, if I should die,
And become an angel too,
I perhaps like them might fly,
And the Saviour’s bidding do.
Beyond the Sunset
Beyond the sunset’s radiant glow,
There is a brighter world I know,
Where golden glories ever shine,
Beyond the thought of days decline.
Chorus:
Beyond the sunset’s radiant glow,
There is a brighter world I know,
Beyond the sunset I may spend,
Delightful days that never end.
Beyond the sunset’s purple rim,
Beyond the twilight deep and dim,
Where clouds and darkness never hung,
My soul shall find its heavenly home.
Chorus:
Beyond the sunset’s dark and drear,
The golden city will appear,
And morning’s lovely beams arise,
Upon my mansion in the skies.
Chorus:
There golden portals ever shine,
Beyond the reach of days decline,
And Jesus bids my soul prepare,
To gain a happy entrance there.

The angels in the air
When life’s labor song is sung
And the silver cords unstrung
O’er the shadowed couch of death we sit
Then the Lord will light the scene
With the angels’ starry sheen
As they are close as to Jesus’ hill
Chorus:
We’ll meet each other there
Yes, we’ll meet each other there
With the angels in the air
Yes, we’ll meet each other there
We’ll meet each other there
Yes, we’ll meet each other there
With the angels, with the angels in the air
Dark the shadows in the vale
Fierce the howling of the gale
But the shining ones are near our door
With our robes as bright as they
We will tread the starry way
With the shadow and the storm no more
Chorus:
Shoot the heart with parting tears
Shoot the heart with parting years
Simple want and woe together here
But the Lord will lift the shroud
That enwraps the weary crowd
And we’ll never know a sorrow there
Oft the cross we meekly bear
There is a land, a sunny land
Where skies are always bright
When evening shadows never fall
The Saviour is the light
Chorus:
Oft the cross we meekly bear
When a crown we shall wear
When we dwell on that radiant shore
Oh, how sweetly there we’ll sing
Hallelujah to our King
And praise Him for evermore
There is a home, a famous home
A heavenly mansion fair
And those we loved as fondly well
Will bid no welcome there
Chorus:
We long to leave these fading scenes
Yes, fade as quickly by
And join the shining host
Where joy can never die
When life’s labor song is sung
And the silver cords unstrung
O’er the shadowed couch of death we sit
Then the Lord will light the scene
